The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Title: The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)
Author: Kody Keplinger
Published By: Little Brown/Poppy (Sept. 7, 2010)
Genre: YA Realistic Fiction
My Rating: 4 Stars

Goodreads Description:
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.
Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

My Review:
This book so wasn't what I was expecting.
It was edgy and a little raw and very much real. I think a lot of teenagers today could relate to some of the problems Bianca and her friends were going through.
While this had a lot of swearing in it and some very adult issues I think it was well written and the characters were awesome.
I like books that surprise me and can take on topics that not everyone is comfortable with and come out handling it beautifully and still give you that HEA that you are looking for in a good story.
I don't however think this is a story for everyone and definitely not for the younger audience.
